Welcome Maya Dixon to the Camp Opportunity Team
We’re thrilled to welcome Maya Dixon as our new Assistant Camp Director! With deep care and a clear vision, Maya will help guide the heart of camp, ensuring every detail supports a space where kids can feel safe, supported, and truly be themselves. Her leadership, compassion, and commitment to our mission already shine bright. Let’s give her a warm welcome!
What drew you to Camp Opportunity and its mission?
“I started going to sleep away camp when I was 13 years old. I remember feeling nervous but excited about the new adventure. For a week, we just got to be kids. I continued going to the camp and then, eventually, volunteering at the camp for an additional 10 years. I have met some of my closest friends, and made some of my fondest memories at camp. When I saw that there was an opportunity to work at a camp with a mission statement that aligned with my own, I was immediately interested. I am elated to join this team and help foster positive memories for our campers like the ones I had at camp.”
What are your goals for Camp Opportunity moving forward?
“I hope to create an inclusive, supportive, and creative environment at camp. I want the campers to feel like they are part of a team that also acts like a family. There are a lot of moving pieces to a successful camp week, and I want everyone to feel comfortable sharing/ advocating for what they need in order to feel happy.”
What are your responsibilities in your position?
“In this role, I’ll be supporting the planning and operations of a transformative camp experience for children ages 8–11 who have experienced abuse or neglect. I’ll be working closely with the Camp Director to coordinate logistics, supervise staff, manage camper care systems, and help ensure that our one-to-one counselor model runs smoothly. I’m honored to help create a space where kids feel safe, celebrated, and free to just be kids.”
Do you have a favorite camp memory or tradition of your own?
“Jumping in the pool with all my clothes on. I did it as a counselor for a few years and my campers thought it was the funniest/ craziest thing ever. Maybe if its hot enough this year I will do it again. Here's to hoping my shoes dry!”
